Ellington Residential Mortgaging Real Estate Investment Trust is a holding company. Co. is a real estate investment trust that acquires, invests in, and manages residential mortgage- and real estate-related assets. Co. conducts its business through its wholly owned subsidiaries, EARN OP GP LLC and Ellington Residential Mortgage LP. Co. acquires and manages residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS), for which the principal and interest payments are guaranteed by a U.S. government agency or a U.S. government-sponsored entity and RMBS that do not carry such guarantees, such as RMBS backed by prime jumbo, Alternative A-paper, manufactured housing, and subprime residential mortgage loans. Many "beginner" or "novice" investors will look at one stock trading at a price of $10 per share and another trading at
a price of $20 per share and think the latter company is worth twice as much. Of course, that is a completely meaningless comparison without also knowing how many shares outstanding there are for each of the two companies,
and then calculating their respective market caps. Comparing the share price of EARN versus a peer is one thing; comparing
EARN market cap versus a peer is a completely different story.
