iShares MSCI EAFE is an open-end management investment company. The Fund seek investment results that correspond to the price and yield performance of its underlying index, MSCI EAFE Index (the Index). The Index has been developed by MSCI Inc. as an equity benchmark for its international stock performance. The Index includes stocks from Europe, Australasia and the Far East. The Fund invests in a representative sample of securities included in the Index that collectively has an investment profile similar to the Index. As of Jul 31 2015, the Fund's total assets were $61,773,040,268 and the Fund's investment portfolio was valued at $61,443,945,247. Understanding the changing numbers of shares outstanding, the changing
share price, and the resulting changing EFA market cap history over the course of time is important for investors
interested in comparing EFA's market cap history versus its peers.
Many "beginner" or "novice" investors will look at one stock trading at a price of $10 per share and another trading at
a price of $20 per share and think the latter company is worth twice as much. Of course, that is a completely meaningless comparison without also knowing how many shares outstanding there are for each of the two companies,
and then calculating their respective market caps. Comparing the share price of EFA versus a peer is one thing; comparing
EFA market cap versus a peer is a completely different story.
Furthermore, via fluctuation both in per-share price and in the number of shares outstanding (via issuance of new shares over time, the repurchase of existing shares),
the market cap for a company like EFA can fluctuate over the course of history.
