Group 1 Automotive is an operator in the automotive retail industry. Through its omni-channel platform, Co. sells new and used cars and light trucks; arranges related vehicle financing; sells service and insurance contracts; provides automotive maintenance and repair services; and sells vehicle parts. Co. sells retail used vehicles directly to its customers at its dealerships or via AcceleRide® and wholesale used vehicles at third party auctions. Co. sells replacement parts and provides both warranty and non-warranty maintenance and repair services at each of its franchised dealerships, as well as provides collision repair services at its collision centers that it operates. We show 54 historical shares outstanding datapoints in our GPI shares outstanding history coverage, used to compute GPI market cap on those dates.
Understanding the changing numbers of shares outstanding, the changing
share price, and the resulting changing GPI market cap history over the course of time is important for investors
interested in comparing GPI's market cap history versus its peers.
Many "beginner" or "novice" investors will look at one stock trading at a price of $10 per share and another trading at
a price of $20 per share and think the latter company is worth twice as much. Of course, that is a completely meaningless comparison without also knowing how many shares outstanding there are for each of the two companies,
and then calculating their respective market caps. Comparing the share price of GPI versus a peer is one thing; comparing
GPI market cap versus a peer is a completely different story.
