iShares 3-7 Year Treasury Bond is an open-end management investment company. The Fund seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S. Treasury bonds with remaining maturities between three and seven years, as represented by the Barclays U.S. 3-7 Year Treasury Bond Index (the “Index”). The Fund invests in a sample of securities included in the Indexthat has an investment profile similar to the Index. Due to the use of representative sampling, the Fund may or may not hold all of the securities that are included in the Index. As of Feb 28 2015, the Fund's total assets and investment portfolio totaled $6,950,104,692 and $6,927,333,788, respectively. Understanding the changing numbers of shares outstanding, the changing
share price, and the resulting changing IEI market cap history over the course of time is important for investors
interested in comparing IEI's market cap history versus its peers.
Many "beginner" or "novice" investors will look at one stock trading at a price of $10 per share and another trading at
a price of $20 per share and think the latter company is worth twice as much. Of course, that is a completely meaningless comparison without also knowing how many shares outstanding there are for each of the two companies,
and then calculating their respective market caps. Comparing the share price of IEI versus a peer is one thing; comparing
IEI market cap versus a peer is a completely different story.
Furthermore, via fluctuation both in per-share price and in the number of shares outstanding (via issuance of new shares over time, the repurchase of existing shares),
the market cap for a company like IEI can fluctuate over the course of history.
