iShares Russell 2000 ETF is an open-end management investment company. The Fund seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of small-capitalization U.S. equities, as represented by the Russell 2000® Index (the Index). The Fund invests in a representative sample of securities included in the Index that collectively has an investment profile similar to the Index. Due to the use of representative sampling, the Fund may or may not hold all of the securities that are included in the Index. As of Mar 31 2016, the Fund had total assets of $29,819,514,409. Understanding the changing numbers of shares outstanding, the changing
share price, and the resulting changing IWM market cap history over the course of time is important for investors
interested in comparing IWM's market cap history versus its peers.
Many "beginner" or "novice" investors will look at one stock trading at a price of $10 per share and another trading at
a price of $20 per share and think the latter company is worth twice as much. Of course, that is a completely meaningless comparison without also knowing how many shares outstanding there are for each of the two companies,
and then calculating their respective market caps. Comparing the share price of IWM versus a peer is one thing; comparing
IWM market cap versus a peer is a completely different story.
