VanEck Merk Gold Trust is an investment trust. Merk Investments LLC, is responsible for, among other things, overseeing the performance of The Bank of New York Mellon and Co.'s principal service providers, including the preparation of financial statements. The purpose of Co. is to own gold transferred to it in exchange for shares issued by it (the Shares). Each Share represents a fractional undivided beneficial interest in and ownership of Co. Shares are issued by Co. in blocks of 50,000 called Baskets in exchange for gold from certain registered broker-dealers or other securities market participants. The assets of Co. is anticipated to consist solely of gold bullion. We show 88 historical shares outstanding datapoints in our OUNZ shares outstanding history coverage, used to compute OUNZ market cap on those dates.

Understanding the changing numbers of shares outstanding, the changing share price, and the resulting changing OUNZ market cap history over the course of time is important for investors interested in comparing OUNZ's market cap history versus its peers. Many "beginner" or "novice" investors will look at one stock trading at a price of $10 per share and another trading at a price of $20 per share and think the latter company is worth twice as much. Of course, that is a completely meaningless comparison without also knowing how many shares outstanding there are for each of the two companies, and then calculating their respective market caps.
