SM Energy Co. is an independent energy company. Co. is engaged in the acquisition, exploration, development, and production of oil, gas, and natural gas liquid (NGL) in the state of Texas. Co.'s asset portfolio is comprised of assets in the Midland Basin of West Texas and in the Maverick Basin of South Texas. Co.'s Midland Basin assets are located in the Permian Basin in West Texas and are comprised of approximately 110,000 net acres and include its RockStar assets in Howard and Martin Counties, Texas, its Sweetie Peck assets in Upton and Midland Counties, and Klondike assets in Dawson and northern Martin counties (Midland Basin). Understanding the changing numbers of shares outstanding, the changing
share price, and the resulting changing SM market cap history over the course of time is important for investors
interested in comparing SM's market cap history versus its peers.
Many "beginner" or "novice" investors will look at one stock trading at a price of $10 per share and another trading at
a price of $20 per share and think the latter company is worth twice as much. Of course, that is a completely meaningless comparison without also knowing how many shares outstanding there are for each of the two companies,
and then calculating their respective market caps. Comparing the share price of SM versus a peer is one thing; comparing
