Spire is the holding company for Spire Missouri Inc. (Spire Missouri), Spire Alabama Inc. (Spire Alabama), other gas utilities, and gas-related businesses. Co. has two primary business segments: Gas Utility and Gas Marketing. The Gas Utility segment includes: Spire Missouri, which is a public utility engaged in the purchase, retail distribution and sale of natural gas, with offices located in Missouri; and Spire Alabama, which is a public utility engaged in the purchase, retail distribution and sale of natural gas principally in central and northern Alabama. The Gas Marketing segment includes Co.'s wholly owned subsidiary, Spire Marketing Inc., which provides natural gas marketing services. Understanding the changing numbers of shares outstanding, the changing
share price, and the resulting changing SR market cap history over the course of time is important for investors
interested in comparing SR's market cap history versus its peers.
Many "beginner" or "novice" investors will look at one stock trading at a price of $10 per share and another trading at
a price of $20 per share and think the latter company is worth twice as much. Of course, that is a completely meaningless comparison without also knowing how many shares outstanding there are for each of the two companies,
