Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF is an open-end management investment company. The Fund seeks to track the performance of the MSCI US Investable Market Consumer Staples Index (the Index), an index of stocks of large, medium, and small United States-based companies in the consumer staples sector, as classified under the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS). The GICS includes manufacturers and distributors of food, beverages, and tobacco, as well as producers of nondurable household goods and personal products. It also includes food and drug retailing companies, as well as hypermarkets and consumer supercenters. As of Aug 31 2013, Co.'s portfolio totalled $1,656,504,000. Understanding the changing numbers of shares outstanding, the changing
share price, and the resulting changing VDC market cap history over the course of time is important for investors
interested in comparing VDC's market cap history versus its peers.
Many "beginner" or "novice" investors will look at one stock trading at a price of $10 per share and another trading at
a price of $20 per share and think the latter company is worth twice as much. Of course, that is a completely meaningless comparison without also knowing how many shares outstanding there are for each of the two companies,
