Orchid Island Capital is a real estate investment trust. Co. invests in residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS). The principal and interest payments of these RMBS are guaranteed by the Federal National Mortgage Association, the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, or the Government National Mortgage Association and are backed primarily by single-family residential mortgage loans. Co.'s portfolio consists of two categories of Agency RMBS: pass-through Agency RMBS, such as mortgage pass through certificates and collateralized mortgage obligations; and structured Agency RMBS, such as interest only securities, inverse interest only securities and principal only securities. Understanding the changing numbers of shares outstanding, the changing
share price, and the resulting changing ORC market cap history over the course of time is important for investors
interested in comparing ORC's market cap history versus its peers.
Many "beginner" or "novice" investors will look at one stock trading at a price of $10 per share and another trading at
a price of $20 per share and think the latter company is worth twice as much. Of course, that is a completely meaningless comparison without also knowing how many shares outstanding there are for each of the two companies,
and then calculating their respective market caps. Comparing the share price of ORC versus a peer is one thing; comparing
